The Full Story

Church History

From its humble beginnings in 1887 in a small community called Kirkham, in Talbot County, the Union Baptist Church has grown to be a church that has adopted its theme: "Becoming That Which Pleases God."

The congregation remained in the Kirkham community for 21 years. The church then relocated to 116 Hammond Street in the town of Easton and remained there for 74 years. The edifice still stands on Hammond Street. We are in the process of renovating and improving the building to be used by the Church. You are invited to drive or walk by and view the place where many souls were saved.

It was from the Hammond Street location that many of the Civil Rights demonstrations and protests of the 1960s were launched. Many of the rights that we enjoy in public accommodations in the Easton area are the result of the efforts of many of our present members.

In 1960, an Improvement Fund was started and land was purchased. As a result of Christian Stewardship, hard work, sacrifices, and blessings from God, our financial assets grew and the effort to acquire more land and to build a new edifice began to take shape and focus. A parsonage was the first building effort. The result of this effort now stands at 22 Clay Street and is provided for our Pastor as a private residence.

As a result of continued prayers and sacrifices, the congregation moved to a newly built church at our present location, 233 Glenwood Avenue on November 21, 1982. The official consecration and dedication to the Glory of God of this building was held on April 10, 1983. Less than ten years later, a new and larger sanctuary was constructed.

Again, as a result of prayers, tithes and offerings, sacrifices of time, talents, and treasures, and blessings from God, the church was completely paid for. We owe nothing to earthly financial institutions, but we owe a debt to God, which we don't have to pay. "Jesus Paid It All." So, we are grateful to Him.

At Union Baptist Church, you will find people from all walks of life. There is a congenial spirit of love and support among our membership. Not only do we desire to minister to those who are members, but we also strive to reach out to those in our community.

There is a place for you and your family at Union. You are encouraged to become an active part of this legacy of struggle and VICTORY!
